Saturday Morning at the Gym

Spent an hour and 45 minutes at the gym today.
Played "Hustle" basketball w/ Ed, "Scoop" and another dude for about 30 min.
Put in 35 hard minutes on the upright bike -  a bit over 6 miles.
Did some minor weights and excercises to work on my "core"
Then free throws -- 22 for 25 then 20 for 25 -- 84%

I like shooting free throws because they require discipline of mind and body.
They also require good form to garner good results.
I'm going to need mental and physical discipline and good running form if I'm going to realize my goal.

$105 dollars pledged this week.

Time for bed-- gotta train in the morning.

until next time.

How it Works

I running the Lakefront Marathon on October 2nd, 2011 in Milwaukee.
I am running in memory of my late Great Uncle (and Lakota Grandfather) Earl J. Kurth, S.J. For more information about Earl and his inspiration link here http://saynotonewports.blogspot.com/2011/02/backstory.html

I commit to run 26.2 miles.
Friends, Family, Acquaintances, and maybe even Complete Strangers pledge their commitment to make a charitable contribution to one or more of the organizations below.

It is typical to pledge either a flat dollar amount (eg. $25, $50, $100, etc.) or to pledge per mile ran (i.e. $1 per mile = $26.20, $2 per mile =  $52.40, etc.)

The Organizations:

1.  Red Cloud Indian School-- the love of Earl's life, and a place I love.  It has has become a beacon of academic hope on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, one of the poorest areas in the nation with a per capita income of less than $6300 a year. http://www.redcloudschool.org/

2.  The Milwaukee Alano Club-- I sit on the Board of Directors of this 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  It has been an asset to the Milwaukee community, providing services for alcoholic and addiction recovery for more than 65 years. http://milwaukeealanoclub.org/

3.  Pathfinders Milwaukee-- A multi-faceted organization serving Milwaukee youth aged 11 through their early twenties.  They operate a youth shelter, a drop-in center with a clothing bank, laundry facilities, offer crisis counseling services and case management.  Volunteering at this organization has been a bright spot in my life. http://www.pathfindersmke.org/

You can commit to pledging by contacting me directly or e-mailing
earljkurthmemorialrun@gmail.com

Please include pledge amount and designate your organization(s).

You've got until October to scrape up some dollars... While I've got 7 months of physical training ahead.

until next time.

It's Not a Sprint

So I ran half a mile today... Sprinted a quarter, walked an eighth, sprinted a quarter, walked an eighth.

There's got to be something between sprinting and walking... I believe it's called jogging and I'm going to have to learn how.

3 miles on the bike.

Free throws-- 13 for 25, then 21 for 25... obviously my heartrate had dropped and I'd found my rythym for the second set of 25.

Jump shot is about as inconsistent as my Jello Jiggler legs right now.

until next time.

I'll take a 7 & 7

7 months and 7 days until the marathon.

Training Day 1...
30 minutes on the recumbant bike, 6 miles.
Jump shot is flat.
Free throws were about 70 %.
Groin hurts.
Daily routine needs to include regular SUPUPS
(Sit-Ups-Push-Ups-Plyometrics & Stretching)
Gonna be sore tomorrow?

New self imposed rule-- I contribute $1 to one of my 3 focus organizations with every pack of cigarettes I buy.

I'm trying to adhere to a 10 cigarette limit per day for this week... I'll update cigarette consumption later this week.... Hey that's $3.50 a week in charitable contributions.

Work out stats to date: 1 hour, 6 biked miles.
Pledged contributions to date:  $1.00

until next time.

The Backstory

I've been kicking this idea around in my head for a few years, and I'm not getting any younger so... Here we go!

The inspiration:

Earl J. Kurth, my maternal great uncle, was a Jesuit priest who spent the majority of his priestly years working at the Holy Rosary Mission on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota.  He served in many capacities while there: he taught at the Red Cloud Indian School, he served as Superior to the mission, and most (in)famously Director of Development.  His mission in life was to love that school, its children, its facilities and do everything and anything within his abilities to not only keep the school alive but to help it progress and grow.

About 10 years ago, near the age of 85, and following a few serious medical accidents (broken arm, broken hip) the Jesuits moved Earl to their retirement community here in Milwaukee.  His body was no longer able to adequately match the intensity of his spirit and motivation.  Earl, who never backed from a challenge, was a miscalculated accident waiting to happen.  At 85, it wouldn't have surprised me if he would have tried to go outside, shovel in hand following a blizzard and begin working... that's just the kind of guy he was.

I visited Earl often at the retirement community.  It was impossible to visit without hearing news about the school, viewing photos of the most recent capital improvements, being handed the most recent newsletter that is sent to donors, hearing that graduation rates were nearing 100%, hearing about students that had received Bill and Melinda Gates scholarships to further their education at college, and on and on and on.

He spent the last years of his life, with his huge spirit and keen mind confined within a body that just couldn't keep up.  He used to "run" down the hallways of the retirement community with his walker leading the way.  This excercise, which was strongly discouraged by medical professionals, looked more like a hunchbacked humanoid turtle shuffling its feet rapidly, while in reality moving about as quick as molasses.  It was one of the most endearing things I've ever witnessed.

In August of 2009, from what would ultimately be his deathbed, Earl confided that he was ready for his soul to be released elsewhere if he was no longer able to be of service, to do as he would say "God's work" of advocating for Red Cloud Indian School.

I hope to channel his spirit, to provide a body not restrained by old age, to run the distance of 26.2 miles in an effort to raise pledged donations to the Red Cloud Indian School, in the memory of Earl J. Kurth.

It's the least I can do to serve the memory and mission of a man who had the softest eyes, most tender heart, keenest mind and "can-do" attitude of anyone I've ever known.

until next time.

Everybody's Got to Start Somewhere

About 2 months ago I sat down and made a list entitled "Attainable Goals".
It consisted of 8 items:
1.  Get teaching license
2.  Obtain a Masters Degree
3.  Obtain regular employment
4.  Become debt free
5.  Read more
6.  Quit smoking
7.  Run a marathon
8.  Live a life of maximum service to self and others

...maybe y'all can see where this is going.
I'm running the 2011 Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon in an effort to raise funds for a few organizations that are near and dear to my life.

26.2 miles... Ridiculous.

I dedicate this endeavor to Fr. Earl J. Kurth, S.J. - my "Lakota grandfather"

until next time.
